In Loving Memory of Marc Yancey: Honoring a Mentor, Champion, and Friend

The gymnastics community lost another distinguished icon of the sport this week, Marc Yancey.  Marc left us at 10:15am. on Wednesday in Sugar Land, TX due to complications related to kidney failure and a serious bout with pneumonia.

Marc has been an internationally ranked judge, has directly coached and/or worked with many Junior and Senior National Team and World Team Members, and has served as a member of the Junior National Coaching Staff, Chairman of the Men’s Program Committee, President of the Sims Scholarship Foundation, and countless other State, Regional & National program committees.   He was a mentor to countless athletes, judges, coaches & gym owners.  He delighted in conversations that spanned all topics, from gymnastics, to religion, philosophy, ballet, music, fine arts, politics, and sneaker culture.  He was a gentleman to the nth degree with southern manners, impeccable style, and exquisite taste.

Marc was a great orator, an ordained minister, and he spoke words of encouragement to individual athletes and coaches alike, both in one-on-one settings, or by presenting in front of large groups with elegance, passion, and utmost precision. He directed State and Regional Championships meets, as well as, many invitationals, including his involvement with the Ricky Deci International Invitational and the Houston National Invitational, as a director, floor manager, or announcer. He had a caring, commanding voice that resonated when announcing athletes at competitions and an infectious laugh that could be heard from across the room when gathering with friends and colleagues!

Marc’s truest passion was coaching, and he coached up to the time of his passing.  He has been involved with numerous clubs in Texas, but his most current joy was coaching alongside his former gymnast, Sam McArthur, at EnRich Gymnastics in Richmond, TX.

Marc was a Life Member of the Gymnastics Association of Texas and received numerous Honorary and Distinguished Service Awards, including the Frank Cumiskey Service Award (the highest award given by the USAG Men’s Dev. Program).  Marc will be remembered as a pioneer, leader and a legend of the men’s and women’s gymnastics communities.  He will be greatly missed, and always remembered.  He is survived by his wife, Elaine, and their son, Colter.
